  • Christine's Story

“If people like me don’t do something, the system isn’t going to get any better.”

Many people who seek cancer care hit barriers at every turn. Data from the Bladder Cancer Patient Experiences survey shows that bladder cancer patients are not receiving the support that should be offered at the hospital.

Unfortunately, Christine’s experience only solidifies this.

  • I was told I was too young to have cancer

    Holly Salmons Story

Holly, a 27-year-old mum of two, had been experiencing unbearable pain and was unable to eat, sleep, or do her everyday activities. As pain took over her entire life, she begged to be listened to by a GP, knowing something was very wrong. Almost a year later, she was finally sent for an ultrasound.

Due to her age, her worries and symptoms were brushed aside and she was told it couldn’t be cancer; she was too young. But they were wrong. At just 26, she was diagnosed with bladder cancer. Luckily, Holly persevered and is now receiving the best care and support, but the outcome could have been very different if she hadn’t listened to her body.

She is now determined to raise awareness and break the stereotype that only older people get bladder cancer.

Bladder cancer is a disease which can affect anyone of any age. If something in your body doesn’t feel right, it is essential that visit your GP and advocate for yourself.

  • Scottish Parliament Motion

    Motion ref. S6M-05553

On July 28th, 2022, a Motion was submitted to the Scottish parliament on Bladder Cancer, led by Stuart McMillan, MSP from Greenock and Inverclyde (Scottish National Party). The motion was supported by over 25 other Members of the Scottish Parliament.

For this, we must thank Laura MacKenzie, our patient advocate, who has worked hard to make this happen through our parliamentary outreach programme. Laura is a vocal advocate for Fight Bladder Cancer, and as a result of her hard work, the motion will hopefully see the Scottish Government consider bladder cancer when developing the new cancer strategy for Scotland.
